What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is everywhere! Mindful eating, sleeping, parenting. It goes on and on. But what exactly is it and why do it? As a long time Practitioner, I began my Mindfulness journey 15 years ago when attending a “Mindfulness in Education” Seminar with my Dad. At the time he was practicing a form of therapy called DBT which was designed to use mindfulness practices to help both teens and their parents that experienced highly intense emotions. Afterward, I realized the truth about Mindfulness. That it is a practice. That in order to benefit you must participate and not just read theory on what it is. Flash forward 15 years and countless seminars later and I can say that after practicing and conducting research on Mindfulness, it can be highly effective as a stand-alone or adjunct to therapy. It works!
Typical activities include:
- Mindful non-judgmental awareness of breath, body, feelings, emotions and/or thoughts (in sitting meditation practice or throughout the day)
- Mindful walking meditation
- Mindful eating
- Mindful body scan in a sitting or lying down position
- Listening with non-judgment
So in a brief nutshell. What is Mindfulness?
It is simply about being aware of what you are thinking and feeling and focus your attention on your awareness. Ideally, one would choose to focus their attention towards optimistic positive mind sets.
There are basically two parts to Mindfulness.
1.The first part involves maintaining you’re attention on the immediate experience, thereby allowing for increased recognition of mental events in the present moment.
2. The second part involves paying attention in the present moment, in a particular way that can include: curiosity, openness and acceptance.
In Summary, I look forward to sharing my knowledge and teachings with you to help you learn the practice and enhance your life. Please feel free to visit my Mindful Moments page to experience more, as well as my Instagram page to engage in daily inspiration.
